I just downloaded this from the Zune Marketplace. It is one incredible album, recorded, I assume, with the Birdland Dream band. Because I got it digitally, I don't have the liner notes, but I'm pretty sure one of the trumpet soloists is Don Ellis.
I'm like a kid in a candy store--unlimited downloads for $11.99 per month. Downloaded 47 albums last night, including a dozen Maynard, a couple of Doc Severinsen, all of Arturo's albums that I didn't already have, Woody Herman 1963 (with Chase on lead), Vizzutti's Carnival of Venus, and a whole bunch of Wynton Marsalis, both jazz and classical. And some Roy Eldridge.
I love my Zune! Anyway, back to my original question--can someone who has "Message from Birdland" tell me who the players were on that album? I think it's one of Maynard's best. _________________ Bryan Fields

Yes, Don Ellis was aboard.
Tpts.: Maynard, Don, Jerry Tyree, Clyde Reasinger
Bones: Slide Hampton, Don Sebesky
Saxes: Jimmy Ford, Carmen Leggio, Willie Maiden, John Lanni
Rhy: Joe Zawinul, Jimmy Rowser, Frankie Dunlop
At leaset that's what I find listed in the Mosaic collection. I don't actually have the album. |

My mistake: Bill Chase was in "A Message from Newport", which I have in the original LP edition.
I've purchased "A Message from Birdland" only a week ago... there wasn't Chase.
But, what a band!
One of MF's best recordings, in my opinion! _________________ Umberto -

I'm not sure that the Birdland Dream Band was much of an entity past the mid 1950s. I think that by the time the recordings discussed here were recording, it was "just" the MF Big Band. I think the BDB only originally recorded those two studio albums (I know there's some live stuff available now).
I suppose the notes from the Mosaic set probably clarify all of this ... perhaps Arranger-Transcriber can check for us. _________________ Jeff Helgesen

I thought that Message from Birdland was the best album Maynard ever made. The writing was so superior to the stuff on Dream band albums. The Message for Birdland was some of Maynard's best jazz playing and the band itself was just a terrific ensemble. |

Is this the album with " Oleo" and "Five Spot after Dark" ? If so, I have it on vinyl, and can check the player listing. I loved this album, and learned a few tunes from it, including a really nice original ballad ( Willie Maiden?), the name of which I can't remember.

Yep, that's the one. It's the best vintage Maynard I've heard yet. _________________ Bryan Fields
