I am new to this forum so maybe I am repeating a subject in the past. But I believe that Rick Braun is one of the best around. For all of you that don't know, Rick Braun is a smooth jazz trumpet player. He plays and improvisises really clean. I just wish I could hear his real trumpet sound. All the recordings I have he either has a harmon mute in his trumpet or plays the fluggel horn. Now don't get me wrong, I don't think he compares to Bobby Shen, Randy Brecker (whom I believe is the absolute best around), or Byron Strippling. Does any of you guys know of some recording of Braun that is not smooth jazz? Just tell me what you all think.

Thanks,
Ben Love

Hi Ben
Yeh, RICK-RULES!!!
As we know, Rick has been hammered quite heavily for his Big$$$SMOOTH-JIZZ roots but I have heard him at a couple of Jazz festivals...AND TRUST THIS...he can well hold his own and improvise with the best.
Many again have knocked his latest "KISSES IN THE RAIN" but fast foward to the smooth-ooozzze' and with-in this CD it is very clear to see that Braun's NO YAHN!
He plays back up on bunches of other artists CD's including one cut from a 3rd Force (Cd by the same name) "IN THE PALE MOONLIGHT" he grooves with an intensity that BLOWS YOUR CHOPS OFF! This song hammers....

I like Rick Braun quite a lot.I am not familiar with all his recordings, but I really like the SHAKE IT UP CD with Bony James. He has a website and is an endorser for Getzen - I think he plays a Getzen Custom - it's on his website.Flugel also. You can get to his website through the Getzen website or I think at http://www.RickBraun.com
I think Rick is a very tasteful and talented player. I like his tone and the musical way he plays.Very enjoyable to listen to.

Actually, if you look at the liner notes for his cd's you will be amazed to find that a lot of the time you think he is playing flugel he is in fact playing trumpet. He just has a great open beautiful tone.

I have "The Best of Rick Braun" cd. I don't listen to it much, but when I do I appreciate his beautiful tone on both trumpet and flugel.
