Hi
Was wondering if the WU 57 could/should be adapted rangewise ?
I like to begin with Gs top of the staff my daily routine.Warm Up.
In a sense, as in Rich's Focal Point way of raising ones hub.
What are your thoughts ?
Thanks

I don't see the advantage... IE transposing this whole warmup up a 5th? I guess if this works for you why not.
I could see extending the range of these exercises as a potentially useful thing to do wrt working on range, but that's already covered in Reinhardt - track routine etc... _________________ Maestro Arturo Sandoval on Barkley Microphones!

You might be able to, although I would discuss it with Rich, Chris, Dave S. or W., or Doug before attempting it.
You are permitted to take the entire Reinhardt Routines 9-Day plan up an octave IF you can. I don’t know if that was Doc’s idea or Rich and Dave’s adaptation, but personally I think that would destroy most players. But it’s good to give you something to shoot for.
When Chris walked me through the short warm up 57 (his version), he recommended doing the range extension all in one shot (NO repeats, just one time on each note starting from G to high C and up chromatically). When you get up to starting on high D and going up to the G, you can then take the G up to Double C. Do NOT kiss the high note off (this will tear down your chops). That can help raise your center point pretty well too and you don’t have to take anything up. I can post Chris’s warm up if you want. You can also find it by googling “Chris LaBarbera short warm up 57”, at least last I checked.

Hi everyone,
My question was regarding the Lip Set Point .
Not playing the whole Warm Up up a 5th.
But taking the principles and adapting from the G top of the staff, raising the hub so to speak
If anyone did that, I am more than willing to know if benefits were to be gained.
Thanks

All the stuff I mentioned can indeed do that. Actually, and this may just be me, but the great thing about a warm up like #57 is that it gets you doing the right things and THAT raises your focal point in and of itself. For me, Chris’s version is even better for this, though both are great.
Another key point is form, place, inhale, play. And try to not “twist and wind up” as Reinhardt called it.
When you do this stuff the right way you are 1). Not playing pedal tones. 2. Not buzzing your mouthpiece. 3. Starting range work from above the staff rather than middle or even low register like so many others like to do. 4. Not dropping the jaw for the low register. 5. Not “falling in love with your sound” and making it harder to play higher.
That adds up! Just those five things can do wonders for raising your lip set point. There’s a lot more to it, too. But I will stop there for now. _________________ Josh Mizruchi
