SONOFA!!! This is the EXACT kind of thing I am ALWAYS looking at the Bay for... don't know how I missed it. Oh well... guess it wasn't meant to be.

I have a feeling this was a "buy it now" and someone was really on top of it to catch it. Probably sold within a few minutes.

Actually, it was a little more complicated than that.

This is the original, non-buy-it-now auction that I was watching. It was ended early due to an "error in the listing:" http://www.ebay.com/itm/350836902845

I thought that was odd so I clicked to view the relisted item and found that the horn had sold for $500.

Two thoughts come to mind:
1. The seller didn't realize what he had and allowed someone to convince him to change the listing and sell early for $500. A problem with this is that the seller, a reselling company, has had a LOT of sales and surely is not that ignorant.

2. The company DOES know what they have and convinced the actual, ignorant seller to accept $500, setting up a buy-it-now with a co-conspirator as the buyer. If this is the case, look to see this horn listed again in the near future. Instead of making a 10% commission, the reseller might be after 600% or better commission.

Something just doesn't smell right here ...

ProAm: thanks for your thoughts and the extra information. I agree - it seems a little strange. Like the old adage: if it seems too good to be true - it is!
