It's true. Hit an elevator door hard enough from the outside and will open. Just no guarantee there will be a car on the other side.

There was a college student who died after falling fifteen floors back during my days at UMass. Some of the jocks broke the elevator door and a poor SOB visiting from Northeastern went into the empty shaft. He was thinking that the lights were just out. A common problem in a jock dorm.

Fell three stories and hit the car coming up. But...

Then bounced off and fell the remain 12 stories down the adjacent shaft.

Remarkably the fall didn't kill him. Was the quick stop actually.
