Hi all,
I recently acquired a trumpet straight mute by Facet Mutes on eBay. It was very cheap, and I jumped on it because I loved the wooden Facet mutes I tried at a convention years ago. But this one is not wooden, and not the same shape as the wooden ones (while still appearing to adhere to the brand's design language).
It's black, and it looks like it's fiber or maybe 3D-printed? Regardless, it plays well with good intonation and minimal resistance. To me, the sound seems somewhere in between a metal straight and something like a TrumCor Lyric.
Anyone know the story behind this mute? I didn't know Facet had made any non-wooden mutes, and I can't find any record of one online.

Looks 3D printed, the surface striations and the transition from the flat surface where the sticker is to the faceted edges are (afaik) unique to 3D printing.
Hope this helps! _________________ 1971 Yamaconn cornet (my comeback horn)

Further to the observation that it's 3d printed, it may be of interest to some that the imperfections in the walls of the facets are actually the result of oscillations within the frame of the FDM machine that was used to print the mute. This can happen due to rapid direction changes of the printing head and the relative rigidity of the frame. It does not affect the strength or functionality of the mute. _________________ Dr. Nathan Sobieralski
