Jimmy Stamp always insisted he taught individual students, not a method.
Therefore it was decided to publish in Edition-Bim's "Warm-ups and Studies"
only those exercises Jimmy used with all of his students.
But I know from Malcolm McNab and Thomas Stevens,
that only some students were encouraged to do lip buzzing
and continued to utilize it in their routine but most other
students did not recall much emphasis on that technique.
Somebody knows Stamp Students which were encouraged to do lip buzzing and can produce the contact? |

From my personal experience I can say that mr. Stamp put a lot of emphasis on lip as well as mouthpiece buzzing. I also still find it, since 1985, wonderful to use in my daily playing. Arto Hoornweg, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra |

As with most master teachers they prescribed different exercises for individual students. I believe Stamp was not comfortable with creating a methodology around his teaching. In saying that I have over the years used many teachers systems including Stamp with great care. I know that many people on this forum prefer one approach over another, for example buzzing versus no buzzing but in my experience if used correctly all of these methodologies are beneficial. |

I studied with Stamp in the 70's. He told me he would never write a book. But there is a book. However, his method is really not in the book.
Anyway, buzzing was never stressed. Like in the book, he just did a few at the beginning always with the piano. mouthpiece was stressed. |

I had another wonderful time... hate to call it "lesson" but I guess that's what it was... with Malcolm McNab. All this talk of tongue level, pedal tones, corners... fine and good, but what matters most is pitch center. I really believe it all comes from that. He had me playing like never. Could not recommend him more.

My teacher studied for some years with Stamp. And he seems to understand the utility and limits of buzzing. He's in Southern California, USA. PM me if you want his contact information. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Stamp in a nutshell.
Mouthpiece is stressed because everywhere is the center on it.
The better/bigger/more vibrant the buzz the more efficient you are.
All the technical stuff are just tools in the toolbox.
Stamp is the toolbox.
Different students are better with different tools. _________________ "Bud didn't worry about this..."

Malcolm McNab hosts a summer workshop every summer at Azusa Pacific University. A big part of the seminar is based on Stamp's teachings and applying them to whatever it is you want to play.
This year's faculty includes Mario Gurarneri, Edward Hoffman, and Boyde Hood (all Stamp desciples).
You may wish to check this out.

Roy Poper is amazing at teaching Stamp. He teaches trumpet at the oberlin conservatory and you could find his email on there. Another great teacher of stamp is Arto Hoornweg from Rotterdam. He reached trumpet at the utrecht conservatorium. you could find his email on the website for that school |

Another, a former student of his, recommended to me by Roy Poper: Jay Coble, trumpet professor at USF in Tampa, FL. |

Does anyone know of any James Stamp students who are currently teaching in the New York City area? I just bought Roy Poper's accompanying text to the BIM Stamp book and I'd like to get some more insights into Mr Stamp's method. |
