I am glad someone mentioned the different shank on the Schilke mp, I thought something was strange when I had to pull my tuning slide almost all the way in to play in tune with others.

I found that the Schilke 'a' backbore to be too tight and bright. But then I'm on a Yamaha and have heard they're stuffy. Haven't really tried anything else in horns to know any better. I went to a Schilke 13A4 and it was too airy.( or raspy works like John M sez.) The comfort of the 4 rim is awesome, but was worth giving up for the minuses, I needed to learn to play with less pressure anyway. So I'm on a Marcinkiewicz 12.2 (Vax) and am pretty pleased with the blow and the tone is nice. Has good core and doesn't thin too bad. For what it's worth......

Today i tried a 14A4a for the first time. I have been playing on a 14A4 for years and love it, but i found the 14A4a way too tight for me. My volume instantly went down considerably.

One question however: The rim shape of the 14A4a i tried is noticably different to my 14a4, The 14a4a was much sharper and with more bite. I was under the impresion the two should look the same with just a different backbore ?

I got my 14A4 off an old guy calld Vic Lloyd who has long since stopped playing, but was playing in London in the 60's so my piece is at least 30 years old. Is it possible Shilke have changed their design over the last 30 years ?

Some peole try to put comparison size numbers to Bachs and Schilkes. I've been playing a Schilke 13C4 as my main mouthpiece, and can tell all that comparing Bachs and Schilkes is like comparing a Honda and a Ford.

Although a 13C4 is SIMILAR to a Bach 3C, it is not equal. Many players try to state that their mouthpiece is equal to a Bach size, which is flat out incorrect. I've found that Bach rims are generally flat, but have a gradual outside rim decline, and a sharp inner-rim. Schilkes, on the other hang, have a flat rim, but less of a decline on either side of the rim. The result is more rim contact, resulting in a perfect air seal.

I love my 13C4. It has an incredibly dark, full sound (conical cup rather than C cup). I can get a boat load of sound out of it, yet there is an unmistakable slight resistance (a slightly smaller venturi), which allows for intimate softs. An extremely flexible mouthpiece, as are all Schilkes, I recommend players whose venues are varied to give one a try.

I can't remember where I read it perhaps the Blue Devil forums they really hate the Schilke's. They won't even let you play on them, said the instructor would throw them away. Said their useless, trash, stuff like that. Weird stuff. I guess it's a good thing I don't play Schilke on my Bb I don't want to get kicked out before I even try out.

I personally think that Schilke makes the best mouthpieces available, and believe me I have tried almost every brand available. I have worked with Carl Hammond to develop a custom piece. It does everything that I hoped it would and Carl was very helpful when I was designing it. The intonation, tonal capabilities, flexibility, stability and dynamic capabilities are second to none, at least for me.

I know many fine players who use Schilkes and many fine players who use other mouthpieces. I think the trick is to find one that makes it easy to create the sound you hear in your head. For me that is Schilke.

John, Scott Englebright plays on a Marcinkiewicz E-14 (Bobby Shew #1) unless he has recently changed.

Scott played a 6A4A in the past.
