Well I downloaded Phil Driscoll and I'd have to say that he did a fine job on the Emmy Awards.
He sounded tired on trumpet for a high note dude. But I give him the benefit of the doubt there.
He sure can sing though! What a great vocal cat. Sounds like Van Morrison or a male Stevie Nicks. Great pitch. They probably rehearsed through too many times. That's why he sounded so tired on trumpet.
That's a big step for a cat that is unknown and thrown into it.
I understand why he wanted to play high, but it really didn't work.
I've never really checked Driscoll out, and he's not my cup of tea, but he's got a gut and I like it. I'll keep my ears on. _________________ Eric Bolvin

He's a cool cat. I think he sounds like a cross between Michael Bolton, and Ray Charles with a little Joe Cocker thrown in.
Anyway, I downloaded some of your MP3's from mp3.com (at least I think it was you) and I like it....keep playin... |

I have been somewhat of a fan of Phil's for years. I am not expert enough to detect tired playing, but he for years has looked and acted physically tired. Years ago he seemed to be into playing along with a real time delayed sound that I didn't like, but he seems to have dropped that. He has a number of CDs out there in the Christian realm. |

Phil's playing/singing felt emotionally flat to me. If they wanted a great vocal talent with the ability to blow (someone as yet deserving wider recognition) I would have preferred seeing Kurt Elling. Regarding the trumpet, check out his vocalese on Freddie Hubbard's tune "Delphia" (Freddie's Yen for Jen). Every performance of his contains magic of great proportion, somewhat obscure literary references, and songs straight out of his soul. After listening to Kurt, it makes most others pale in comparison. Worth checking out if your not already hip to this man. |
