After communicating with many Adams students, I see him as having an utterly different approach to getting a trumpeter to progress. I tend to agree that if one wants to work on a method, such as TCE or BE and stuff like that, do that first. Then go to Adam to get a much more mental and aural approach to the game.

This is my intention, though by default. I can't find enough free-time till summer break to engineer a couple trips down to Bloomington.

I am still using Jerry's ideas and trying to further develop and apply them to some other thigns I'm working on with all of this. I'll probably be posting elsewhere on this matter as I ge more into it.

Well put! I'd be very curious to learn if Adam personally and directly un-did your TCE progress. I'd think judicious application of the mental / aural approach would just help stabilize things, if that were your goal.

Hi Nick,
I really enjoyed following your progress with tce ...along with sound bites and practice sessions ...this is such a treat as I enter my 5th week of trying to master this method .
You mention using the John Lynch Asymmetric 342M mouthpiece to great advantage ..I'm using the Opera 545 and was about to order a lead 342...is it your opinion that the 342M is better suited to this endeavour and have you any idea when it might become available.
Thanks for providing a really solid thread on this great topic.

I personally use my Lead model on all types of playing on B-flat, including legit. I use my Opera model on C trumpet. I use the 3C on E-flat trumpet.

For B-flat, I like the lead. The top half is WIDER than the Opera. However, it is a bit shallower.

Hey Kyle: (and anybody else)

I got to thinking, how you apply an "Adam-esque" approach, staying strictly within the bounds of Callet's teaching. It's also something that has done me a lot of good!

My main problem as per Jerome's diagnosis is "my spit buzz seeps."
You said (not in direct response to me, but I was listening anyway) to
hear each attack like a snare drum.

There's nothing about this that conflicts with any mechanics Jerry teaches, and anyone trying this has probably done everything they can to employ his direct mechanics already. So what does this mental effort, concentration, or "aural approach" actually accomplish? Some would say it unleashes the power of our subconscious, and muscle memory. I would say that the deeper the level of concentration on sound, the quicker this process makes an audible difference. I'd also add that we're each wired differently, so YMMV.

Obviously, if we concentrate on sound and stray from TCE mechanics, we're not going forward w/ TCE.

While I could pinpoint a LOT of differences where Adam and Callet conflict in their teaching, I don't think that would do anybody any good. I think there's plenty of overlap where we can benefit from both, and this is a good example, since it's already proven!

Ray, Certainly, nothing is more important in TCE than the hearing of it. In Jerry's system, the ear is properly trained when it hears the slightest loss of proper trumpet sound. That tells the teacher or advanced student that something physical is going wrong. And at the most advanced level the sound is able to tell just what physical aspect is going wrong. As this is all done very much on the conscious level I'm not aware that it connects to an Adam's approach. But, I'm always happy to learn more about it. Best regards, Kyle

Agreed! Jerry isn't "afraid" to let us use our conscious mind. Adam's avoidance of it didn't do me so much good, and will never bring our tongue to the top lip to create the wedge.

Once that much is accomplished, usable, strengthened, co-ordinated, stabilized, etc., what I see as Adam's main point still comes to bear. The way Kyle put it is "when you're getting paid to play, you'd better play."
Adam's point is under those circumstances, you resort to ... well, whatever that is, that's the way you REALLY play. All else isn't so important. We all want our TCE functioning at it's best, even on that "auto pilot" level. Good practice habits are essential, but mental effort, concentration etc. can make a world of difference too.

Hello, Folks!

I wan't sure how to post this here at TH, so I thought it would make sense to append this to some threads I had started.

I'll be at the ITG conference for one day - 6/7. I'll be arriving in the late afternoon early Tuesday evening (6/6) and heading over to my hotel to crash. I'll be spending the entire day at the Eclipse booth with Leigh McKinney and Felix Vayser.
