Reference: Tims dual belled trumpet project
I received this crazy horn last week.
Thanks to Tim for the opportunity... for your creativity, hard work and generosity.
The day I got it, 2 guys were there at the store, one, a brass instructor for a local HS marching band. His first comment was something like Two Bells/Two times Power on the field. Then I explained that it was one bell at a time.
It was 'show and tell' all week at the studio. Every single one of my forty some students had a chance to play it, and we had a blast with it.
I used an Emo harmon which is real light weight and more of a sound contrast. My husband spent more time on it than any of us, and did more different things with it. It's a kick just to experiment . He did some jazz stuff then he was playing Carnival of Venice variations.
With out the mute, the bells are very well matched, in sound and pitch.
I'm completely impressed.
Tim has described it pretty well, so I'm not going back over that. It is a little bell heavy, with the extra bell and the fact that they are mounted forward. But it's not nearly as awkward as it might appear.
I had to watch some of the younger kids - I found some wanted to hold the horn by that 4th valve, which obviously is not good.
I should mention - it does sit fine on trumpet stand, and seemed pretty safe.
It's all ready to ship out to the next person, and looks like it will be under $12 to send to another PA address. I'll advise to use Postal Service Priority Mail. UPS will eat you alive on the DImensional Weight.
I also made up a case for it, that I'm sending along. it's makeshift but it works.
I hope everyone else enjoys the horn as much as we have. |

i know it would make it heavier, but maybe if you could balance it out with a counterweight near the mouthpiece? Did mr brown mention something about a sleeve on the leadpipe maybe? _________________ "Music is a combination of logic and emotion that together express more than either could possibly express alone." |

Hello! BTW, you can call me Tim; my dad (at eighty eight) is "Mr. Brown". Somehow that's a bit to heavy for my shoulders even at my age (51).
Yes, I've thought of a counter weight but not sure that I'd want to do that; I don't like heavy horns and the "bell heaviness" isn't that big of a deal. When you get it and try it you will see what I mean. Also, I might find a way to shorten the bells with wrapped tubing. THat would solve the problem and not add so much weight.
Yes, I did reinforce the leadpipe. I simply used an outer tube from a tuning assembly off a very old Cavalier cornet. It stiffens the leadpipe without being obvious. didn't want to clutter the thing up with more braces.
Thanks and be patient! you'll have your hands on it before long...

Thanks PC for being so kind as to take the time to play with the horn, review it and even make a case for it!
This was my first attempt at really *doing something*. Up till now it was a lot of bell straightening, dent and slide removal and valve fixing. So you'll understand why your review means so much.
I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as you have and as much as I did building it!

I thought the same thing about a counter weight - there isn't anyplace for it.
It's really not much different than a herald trumpet. A bell doesn't add much weight. The balance of it is just the factor of positioning of the bells combined with the fact that you can't grip it with the left hand like you normally would.
[aside]... shoot! I meant to weigh it and forgot until now and it's too late because it's in the hands of the Postal Service.
fwiw, If anyone wants to see what I did for a case, it's documented here
And Tim - the most amazing thing to me is the fact that I KNOW you don't have a heck of a lot of training and experience. I hope this is the first (2nd - the herald was first, I think) of many successful projects. |

Actually, I weighed it on my bathroom scales and it is just over two pounds. The second bell doesn't add much.
Thanks for the complement on my work. Gary Ferree has been a great mentor...even though it's only by email. He's helped shorten the learning curve a bit.
I've auctioned and sold five herald horns made from trumpets ( with some problem I couldn't fix...such as bad valves) and sold five refurbished horns. Trust me, I have some brass pieces out in the garage that I've ruined learning not to get the metal so hot.
Did you know that you can fuse two tubes together if you heat them too much, and too many times? It gets to where it is impossible to get an inner slide out of the female tube...because the two are fused together. You see what I've done but you don't see the messes I've made in the learning!
But I do sincerely appreciate your kind complements....!

Well, I managed to get the list of names in the tryout out of order! It was:
PC King
The BD
Timberline
PMWLead
Trumpetplayer87??? (Not a definite, depends on her schedule)
Nick_08
Vivace
It is now as follows:
PC King * Done and shipped to PMWLead
PMWLead
The BD
Timberline
Trumpetplayer87??? (Not a definite, depends on her schedule)
Nick_08
Vivace
I had PC KIng send it to PMWLead by accident instead of to "The BD". My apologies. I had tried to arrange the list so it would be where varous people needed it, when they needed it. Hopefully it will still work out ok.
Again, my apologies for the mess up.

Well, I'd figure up to a week for each person, one person isn't sure if she will be around to get it if it is shipped, and any new names will be put at the end of the list.
Does that get it to you at a good time?

Shouldn't take much more than that regardless. On average I think it's three.
As far as Bonnie (trumpetplayer87) is concerned, she was really iffy about it. Her family is on the road alot doing concerts. She can be hard to keep in touch with. So it may very well be she'll opt out till later, which is ok...although I hate to see that happen.
