OK, any opinions out there on Chris Botti? I picked up his NIGHT SESSIONS CD recently - I really enjoy his sound, sense of phrasing, etc. I believe he's playing on an old Martin Committee, with a Bach mcp? Anybody seen him in person?

If chris botti played the sax would we care? His music is pop, not jazz or anything else.... as long we don't compare it to that.
I think he has a great sound and alot of people seem to like him and his music and if he has the ability to touch alot of people with his music then more power to him.

Never have seen Botti in person, but I do like his tone and style. Plays with a lot of finesse and "tastefulness."I enjoy listening to him quite a lot. My favorite Botti tune is "Drive Time." I guess I like players like Botti(and Rick Braun) who seem to make the horn "sing" like a vocalist might do. Especially like players with this type of sound(tone),and appear to have a very relaxed way of playing. It all sounds so "easy."

I guess this makes me a long time fan of Herb Alpert as well. I'm not really all that impressed with screamers etc., - just like to hear nice tone, phrasing, and a song played that is enjoyable to listen to.

Chris Botti is a complete player. I saw him in the JazzTrax Christmas tour in 2000 with Jonathan Butler, Alex Bugnon, Waymon Tisdale and (I'm ignorant)a drummer who escapes me at the moment. Those guys serenaded, rocked and jammed that nite like nobody's business. Chris Botti studied under Adam as well as Woody Shaw. He's got all the tools. Can't blame the guy for wanting to make a few bucks along the way going a little mainsteam and pop.

I admire Chris Botti. I wana be that kind of musician. He is a musician first and a trumpeter second.

And he is popular on the radio station that is listened to by more than any other.

Seventy percent of the united states rates the easy listening channel as most listened to.

Those are big numbers.

He will leave his musical niche in humanity.

Not many other trumpeters can say that.

WARNING #1 TO ALL TRUMPET-PLAYING "PURISTS" . . .

Listening to trumpeters like Chris Botti can cause young, impressionable kids to want to take up the trumpet, and thus keep this old wind instrument from becoming obsolete.

LISTENER DISCRESSION ADVISED!

WARNING #2 TO ALL NON-TRUMPET PLAYING PEOPLE . . .

Listening to trumpeters like Chris Botti can cause you to purchase recordings of trumpet players and thus keep this old wind instrument from becoming obsolete.

Chris is an old pal.

Every time I've seen him as a band leader he has made a big deal out of acknowledging young people in the audience. He thanks them for coming and thanks them for listening to music made by real people playing real instruments. He asks if any of the kids play trumpet. If they say yes he asks their name and makes a speech about how little "Alex" over there is helping to keep music alive by learning the trumpet. He also tells little "Alex" that there is no substitute for practicing.

Right on Tom!
In the 60's, it was listening to guys like Herb Alpert and Al Hirt on the radio AND seeing them on TV, that inspired countless numbers of kids (including me!) to take up the trumpet and get in band. Now, if guys like Botti and Braun can get that same thing going now, GREAT!
