Does anyone know who plays trumpet on Etta James Time after Time cd?? I love the solo on 'valentine'. It sounds like Chet Baker to me but I don't know if he ever played with here.
Thanks,

The trumpet player on the Etta James "Time After Time" CD is Ronnie Buttacavoli. As for sounding like Chet, Etta James states in the liner notes: "My Funny Valentine is all Chet. The boy owned the song. And for this session, when my trumpet man Ronnie Buttacavoli played Valentine behind me, we felt the ghost of Chet Baker float into the studio and rest on Ronnie's shoulder. We got goose bumps".

Thanks for the information. I'm glad to hear that my 'ear' for horn styles is improving I'll look for some other recordings with that guy.

She is by far my favorite vocalist. I LOVE Krall, Sutton, Vaughan, etc. But Etta just does it man She's got so much feeling. Wish I could play a horn like she sings!

My favorite vocalist was Carmen McCrae, but Etta appeals to me for the same reason: honest emotion. Etta's Ev'rybody's Somebody's Fool really does bring tears to my eyes, it's that powerful.
