Do any of you have an opinion on a trumpet player, old or new, jazz or classical, that you feel deserves wider recognition? |

CHRIS BOTTI. His tone is the best I've ever heard. Better than Herb Alpert. _________________ Max |

Ken:
I purchased the Village Vangard CD a while ago and I agree, particularly with Scott Wendholt. He has a unique and individual approach to improvisation that I really like. His CD's on the Double Time label are great. Another newer player that I feel doesn't get the attention he deserves is Ryan Kisor. |

How about Chuck Findley? The guy's got it all, sound, jazz concept and ideas, and he swings his ass off. Chuck should be recorded every month...damn, what a player. Of course, there aren't too many recordings of his work out there, but all of you must check out his recent release (it's available only from him) at http://www.chuckfindley.com All tracks can be sampled. Enjoy!

Hi,
Thanks for the clarification Larry. I couldn't find it last night . . . but it surely was worth the effort!
Wonderful performance, a "must have" album for me!
Thanks again!

Robert Nagel. He made huge strides in the trumpet world, both as a teacher and as a player. He is one of the last remaining players who was a student of the old cornet/brass band era. He was one of a handful of teachers who collectively have tought almost everyone of us. He was responsible for virtually every major brass quintet composition of the 20th century. And he was co-founder of the ITG. Not to mention a true gentleman.
Now in his late 70's he can still blow the walls down and is a wonderful model for us all.
He truly needs to be honored and remembered. _________________ "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." |

Chuck Findley and Miles...ON THE MOVIE SCORE FOR
"DINGO" is perhaps one of the very highest intensity trumpet playing anyone will ever hear in this lifetime.
CHUCK NAILS MILES HIDE...RIGHT UP ON THE WOODSHED WALL...so to speak!!! Chucks amazing engery is NOT OF THIS WORLD!!!! WHOAH!!!!
When I need a pick me up....this CD is a killer illustration of STYLE AND PROFILE....
Each time I listen to this one, with that great driving beat and hearing the response from the crowd...
Miles gets rave reviews for this CD, but Chuck steals the lock-stock and barrel. |

I agree that Chris Botti deserves more credit. his tone is better then herb albert. I even dare to say that you could compare his style to sort of Chet Baker.
I heard Chris for the first time with sting. and I was amazed. Chris Botti is awsome. |

Right on...but as much as I love Chet and Herb...I gotta say Chris actual sound and quality of late is really perhaps as good if not better than either one.
The first time I heard Bottifly play about 5 years ago...I THOUGHT I WAS LISTENING TO A HERB ALPERT CLON...except that he actually refreshingly FINISHED HIS NOTES.
Herb has that characteristic habit of sounding like he is just tired of the note or just simply ran out of air.
Thankfully Herb...never had a teacher to tell him to connect the dots...uhhh notes together cleanly and lyrically, but this of course as we all know it, it the Style...
and after listening to Bottiefly, he at least CONNECTS THE NOTES and has a much denser sound than either Chet or Herb.
After playing his new and latest CD Mr. Bottie has COME A VERY VERY LONG WAY...perhaps due in part from playing with some really highest caliber musicans with STING!!!!
but sadly....
I wish Bottie would LOSE THOSE RAG-TAG ALONG BAND MEMBERS in his latest group...which for the most part are draggin' his chops down.
He deserves more quality and better appearing, less sloppy playing and looking colleagues.
Owwweeee! Aren't I just mean and nasty.
Look what happened to Dave Douglas when he hooked up with a bunch of yaaahoo's and lack luster musicans from who knows where and in doing so, produced a horric mess called
"WITNESS"
but at least Chris with his talent and vast vast improvement has given a much more stellar performance than Dave Douglas and Chris pulls off a quite good CD in spite of his rag tag bunch of near-de-wells...
I too give Chris RAVE....REVIEWS...FOR WHAT MY MEAGER 2 PENNIES IS WORTH.))
HAMMA' TIME!!

Just so I can sound like a homer...
I assume that you all know that Botti & Wendholt both are graduates of the Indiana University jazz studies program!
Happy New Year!

George Graham (doubters listen to his cd With Alot of Help from my Friends, awesome straight ahead coupled with frightening screaming), Randy Brecker, and for anyone within any kind of distance to Philly, check out guys like John Swana, Tony DeSantis, and Joe Cataldo, they play as well at least as well as anyone I've ever heard. |
