I just bought an "open box" 180S43R online. When I compare it to the older "LR" models, it looks like the leadpipe has been lengthened, and the front bell brace is now closer to the bell flare. It more closely resembles the Yamaha 8335IIRS now.

Apologies if this has already been covered on TH.

This is my horn:

Hi,

Yes, the R is a new designation. You can tell the new generation because R is at the end vs. the old that has LR at the beginning. The old Schilke style reverse leadpipe horns (LR180S37) also had lightweight bodies and the new style reverse leadpipe (180S37R) has a standard weight body. Both had standard weight bells. I did it that way because I felt that R at the end made more sense than LR at the beginning and was more in line with industry standard nomenclature. You can still find the old style reverse leadpipe on the new 17043GYR. Hope you enjoy the horn!

Ah, thank you. That is good news regarding the switch to a standard weight body. I did not know that.

I bought an LR43 in 1991. The horn didn't wow me. I mean, it was okay, but it was lacking something. Core, maybe?

I'd like to try one of the redesigned ones. The Xeno version is appealing, but I prefer the 43 bell over Yamaha's bell.

That uses the same proportions as reversed Xeno trumpets.

I happen to be among those very happy with the old LR180 (and I have Yamaha's to compare to) - but my opinion is just me.

For those who like the Yamaha feel, this may be a plus. It will be interesting to see if the market rewards, or punishes, this change. It is a good metric to evaluate the differing approaches to reversed construction.

I have a anniversary (1986 I believe) LR with a 43 bell. One of those "Liberace-looking" horns in silver with gold trim (ghastly if you ask me!), an WHAT a player that horn is!!!

Hey trumpetera, I definitely agree about the ghastly finish: silver plated with gold slides and valve buttons — ugh! HOWEVER, I’d really love to try a reverse leadpipe Bach, especially the Mariachi or the new Apollo. From what I hear and read, those must be great horns.

My horn arrived. Construction and plating are excellent. Sound and slotting are good, but I put some Bach brand "heavy" bottom caps on it as an experiment (though they aren't very heavy relative to other caps I've owned).

I can't say how this model compares to the old generation LR, sound wise, but it has sufficient core for most any application.
