Hi all! I'm new to playing trumpet and wondering if someone can help me out.

In August, we are having a party for several things, one being my husband's 64th birthday. It's going to be a musical party, and he asked if I could practice the intro to the Beatles "When I'm 64" (before the song starts). on my trumpet.
I kind of have it down, but am not great at transposing from one scale to another. Can anyone let me know what notes they would be? If I had the notes, I can do the rest.

It would really make his birthday if I could do this, so I appreciate any help while I am learning.

That's valid if you're playing a C trumpet. For Bb trumpet, you need to play a whole note higher, beginning on F# (key of D).

Thanks, Ronnman - I was actually looking for the notes for the intro - before the song starts. I'm figuring it out by ear, but not quite getting it right..

Basic transposition when playing a Bb trumpet using music written for key of C instruments (piano, hymnal, guitar, etc.)

Yes, you need to play 1 whole-step higher than the written notes.
This can be done by adding 2 sharps to the written key signature and playing the note on the line or space above the written note .... accidentals do make it complicated!

For playing 1 whole step lower (e.g. to ease singing), add 2 flats and play the note below the written one.

Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

EileenMH - see attached link, maybe this has the short intro you’re seeking or can build on.

Think it's an oboe solo (?) and this should give you an idea though it's for guitar but you'll get it!

Not so fast, sports fans, LOL. The intro is on clarinet, a Bb instrument. All the OP has to do is write out what she hears as the (already transposed) clarinet notes.

Let's get this correct.

The first printed excerpt is correct for the tune but doesn't show the requested intro and is in concert pitch rather than in the correct key for trumpet.

The second is correct for the tune but shows only half of the intro and is in a key for Eb instruments such as alto sax rather than the correct key for trumpet.

For trumpet, one needs to be in the key of D. The first three notes are F# E# F# (F sharp F natural F sharp). After the first four bars of introduction, there follows two more bars of an extended (held) tonic chord. After that, we're into the tune. Notice that the piece ends as it begins, using the same four-bar fragment of melody.

@Arranger-Transcriber and @Ronnman - thank you! This was a big help.
