Day of reflection and remembrance.
("Pearl Harbor Day").

My wife is Hawaii born and raised. She relocated to New England a few years after college. We visit pretty much every year.
My father in law worked at Pearl Harbor as a metal worker in the Navy Yard. On the morning of December 7, he had finished working 3rd shift and had gone home. Shortly after the attack, he was called back in to work. He spent the next few weeks working on the ships that were salvageable. Work went on round the clock for several weeks. Workers were being shot at by Japanese spies hiding in the bushes.
One year when he was in his late 80's, we were visiting during the summer. He was walking with my wife and me near The Academy of Art. Out of nowhere he began telling us about that day and what happened in the following weeks. He talked for quite a while. After we got back to the family home my wife remarked that she had never heard him talk about it. We asked her older brother, and he said the same thing. Almost no one in the family knew he had been there that day.
After that day he never spoke about it again. Dad was a very quiet, reserved man, I guess it was cathartic for him to finally talk about it after all those years.
