Drill: Metronome on (slow, like 60 BPM), measures of 6/4, play a full quarter note on beat one, take the trumpet off of your chops, reset and play the next quarter note on beat one of the next measure (quarter note, then 5 beats of rest). Start with a single pitch, middle of the staff, when that is accurate many times in a row, work in both directions (up and down), scales, other patterns, or random notes. Be sure to break contact with the mouthpiece between notes, so that you're practicing that first note in isolation.
