Being bummed out that I didn't brave the skating rink 1-5 coridor to Tacoma last night to catch Terrece Blanchard...
I channel surfed until I found Channel 9's wonderful old 1981 NewYork's Central Park Simon and Garfunkle bash.
What a great bunch of memories came flooding back from that one.
QUESTION??? WHO WERE THE TWO great trumpet artists that really carried the performance???
One little bald headed red bearded guy in a shiney-blue jacket...and the other player was a black bearded and mustached dude.
They seemed so relaxed and really added soooooo much to the performance. What a looooooong gig...but both guys just kept hammerin'away with those nice big above the staff screamer endings and accents.
I just missed the credits to the musicians so I was only able to catch a quick glimpse...and my lame brain just couldn' catch the name of the trumpeters as the list, didn't say who played what...
Great support NYC musicians for that greatest of great performances...and all that jazz.
Can any one help??? These two trumpet players were outstanding musicians, worth checking out. |

Thanks for their names. I missed the credits....

John Gatchel has retired in Florida--last i heard. John Eckert is still playing his butt off in NYC. Eckert was the original trumpet player in the American Brass Quintet which he left to pursue jazz. i have played with him on many occasions and he is one of my favorite musicians and people in the world

Thanks for your update on our 2 Johns...
Laurie, I would love to hear more about you and your experiences playing with Eckert.
From all appearences...he seemed to be so at ease but added so much to that concert. Those two trumpet players worked together as a real great team duo and seemed really have everything wired to a science. |

John Eckert and I have played in many swing bands together including Benny goodman. Currently with both play with the BMI Composer's Workshop Band, which performs new music.
