John no longer teaches at GSU. I'm not sure if he is still teaching at Clarke Atlanta though. Kevin Lyons and Yvonne Tull are now teaching at GSU.

Yes, Joe retired. The new teacher at App. St. is Bill Jones (a Vacchiano student), http://www.music.appstate.edu/faculty/jones/.

I have to toot my own horn. I have just accepted a half time jazz studies position at Wright State University. I don't yet who the interim trumpet teacher is. I don't know if I count on the list since the gig is only half time and I'm not teaching lessons of any sort at this point. But, if anyone wants to play routine while they are around Dayton or Cinti, contact me.

I heard that Joe Van Fleet is teaching at Eatern Kentucky. I think it may only be temporary though. Not sure, just thought I'd throw it out there.
Dave Thomas and John Zappa teach in the Cincinntai Area. They studied with Pat Harbison, and Mr. Adam... I think!?! |

As did I! Zappa is at Nothern Kentucky and I think Dave teaches at a Christian school. Both great players and people! Joe Van Fleet who was the trumpet AI at IU while I was there started out playing in the Lexington Symphony. Great guy and a really great player!

Well, Adam is located in Indiana. It sort of stands to reason. B-town is where the south meets the midwest.
Not so many Caruso students on the west coast either, etc.

Terry is in Boston. Terry is really great. Terry is not an Adam student.
Boston is an area where not a lot of us have settled at this point. |

Damn. I asked Greg Wing who I could study with in Boston and he said Terry Everson. Is there anyone else you guys could think of? |

Why are you set on going to school in Boston? It seems logical to me that if you want to study with a specific type of teacher you need to go where that teacher is teaching.
Terry is wonderful. He is not an Adam student. However, if I were looking to study traditional/legit/classical trumpet in Boston I would probably go to Terry.
If you are jazz oriented, John McNeil teaches at NEC and studied for a few years with Mr. Adam. However, Adam's way of doing things never really clicked for John and he does not teach from that paradigm. John has had great success playing and teaching based on Caruso's approach.
McNeil is also one of the world's 2 or 3 finest private jazz improv teachers. |
