Kanstul 1525 Copper Bell

Has anyone had any experience with the Kanstul 1525 Copper Bell Flugelhorn?

I've heard a lot of good stuff about them and was wanting to know the low down on this horn.

I have played the 1525 it is a well crafted horn. I have a 10 year old Burbank that is in perfect shape. The Burbank has a slightly smaller bore and the bell is smaller by half an inch. I do not have to work as hard to make the horn speak. I find that I am better able to control my horn in comparison to the larger 1525. The copper bell gives the instrument a rich, warm sound. The valves are incredible - like silk only better. I don't think you will go wrong buying a Kanstul instrument. Take a look at the Chicago before you buy. I think it is based on the Burbank. Where are you located? There are quite a few dealers who carry the Kanstul line. Dick Akright in Oakland or Priscilla King in Pa are both great sources for Kanstul instruments. Best of luck!

I own one and it is a GREAT horn! I've probably owned/played just about every make/model flugel available and this one wins hands down! If you have any specific questions shoot me an email and I'll be as specific as you want.

I've been very happy with the 1525. PICK music is a good place to get one.

I toyed with Jack Kanstul's specially tweaked Flug like the one you mentioned about 3 years ago...GADS! YES!!!! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART...THAT PLAYS AS BEAUTIFUL AS IT LOOKS!

I tried it along with his other flugel horns. Another very good inexpenive flug..that Jack had available was his nice sounding "Chicago" which I would have brought home....if I could have gotten it past my CFO Carol.
Just talk about a awesome piece of brass art. Well that Copper-beauty Kanstul...is a great ride.

Hi,

Highly recommend it. Great valves, with a sound like hot chocolate. Looks the part as well. I tried one of Andy Taylor's flugels in his workshop and when he asked me what I was playing now he replied "Nuff said". That's a great endorsement if you've ever played one of his flugels.

Beautiful horn ...

Hopefully I'll get a chance to play one in a couple of weeks when I attend
the DFW Trumpet Fest ...

I checked with Brookmays last wednesday .. I was in Dallas for the day. They didn't have
any Kanstuls that could be found. They told me to try an "Open House" as a new Hotel in
Plano in a few weeks ... very odd response from the "Brass Specialist" at the Brookmays store.

I was in the store trying to pickup a flugelhorn mp to start with and they were out of them also.
"We can special order it ... for you" Can you believe they didn't have a flugelhorn mp in any of
the Dallas-Ft.Worth area stores? What's this world coming to these days?

I think I saw in the DWF thread that Andrew Fowler will have his 1525 there and another player will have a Chicago model with copper bell. To round out the Kanstul line I will be sending a Custom Class with copper bell.
These are all beautiful instruments. At least for me - they scream QUALITY!!
The differences are in the bell and bore size. Some players do prefer the smaller bore and bell on the Chicago & Custom especially lead tumpeters who need one for section work, and find they can get around the horns a little better. They are very warm, but a little lighter. It's - again - personal preference. The sound of the Signature is about as rich as can be though.

-- yesterday I had a show rehearsal, Edwin Drood. sitting between the trombone and horn. I've mostly played mine in big band settings and I noted that the sound with the 3 instruments was really nicely blended. And the intonation is dead on! At one point I caught the trombone player STARING at my horn - just in awe. really. He plays in a quintet and is going to be bugging one of the guys to come see me.
if you see one - hear one -play one, that's all it takes.

I will be bringing mine, but it has a few scars from being carried in a Kanstul Chicago Double case. The piece that seperates the two horns isn't very sturdy so somehow duringtravel it moved and the flugel took the damage. It still plays wonderfully, the dent's had no effect on playability or tuning.

Now I could go no and on about the flugel and how wonderful it is. But I'll try to keep it short. It is the best flugel I have played, hands down. The first time I played it, after twenty seconds, i was begging for one. It was two and a half years before I was able to purchase one, that was a very unpleasent wait....LOL I did have a chance to own two flugels between that period a newer French besson by kanstul and an olds probably made while zig was in charge. They were good horns but the 1525 is THE horn.

Are you going to let me play that horn? I'll bring my horns for people to play also if my schedule permits.
Our football team is in the playoffs and I won't know the schedule for another week. As of now though, my
plans are to attend the Trumpet Fest ....

I have a friend who owns a real MENDEZ horn and I'll give him a call and see if I can bring it ... heck, I might
even bring the old man along too.

I wonder if anyone on the TH has played both the Kanstul 1525 and the Conn Vintage One flugel??

I have the Vintage One and I really like the way it plays... except, from playing for nearly a year and having read other comments, I have come to the conclusion that it is not a very dark sounding flugel.

I would prefer a darker sound. Maybe someone that has tested both will jump in and comment.

Sure you can play it, thats the point right...LOL I remember my Mendez's those were great horns. Fast Valves, free blowing, and great sounding.

I played the conn vintage one flugels on several ocassions, first time I played them I didn't even think twice about them. I did play them again at the last ITG and was more thoroughly impressed but I didn't prefer them over the 1525. Just personal preference I guess.

done my my friend - a horn player.
I have a bunch of her stuff hanging in my studio.
The only problem with having do a painting is giving the horn up long enough.
funny story - I remember telling my brother that I was going to have my friend paint my husband's flugelhorn. - he said - Why? won't that affect the sound??

The V1 is a super flugel, but it's in the classic, light-tone vein of flugel horns. The 1525 is from the dark end of the spectrum. Fit and finish are equivalent. Both are excellent. Choose based on which tone your prefer. I like mine light.

I will agree with all of the great reviews of the 1525 - very rich, velvety sound, and as was mentioned the valves are exceptional. (The copper bell also looks beautiful, too!) I unfortunately don't get enough opportunities to play mine as often as I would like! It's great fun to play, but a different type of sound than I have experienced with Yamahas or other "lighter" sounding horns.
