There is a Schilke XA1 cornet on eBay at the moment (10/16/03) with no bids and 3 days to go.. Opening bid is $ 900 with no reserve. This is a STEAL. You will want to jump all over it.

Good Luck

Yea it's STEAL alright, Bangkok Tailand and they only accept wire transfers, hhhhmmmm, looks fishy to me. I wouldn't touch that one with your 10 foot pole.

From Bankok a wire transfer form of payment doesn't surprise me and the guy has a % 100 feedback report with 21 positive reports.

Looks OK to me.

I can vouch that the Schilke cornet on Ebay actually does exist - I sold it to him a while ago!

I've no idea why he's selling it, but when I sold it it was a very nice instrument.

This is just way too cool. A bunch of us guys from the U.S. looking at a cornet in Bankok which was sold to him by a guy from down under. I feel like I am reading an international intrigue novel. That $ 900 Schilke is looking better all the time

A small world we live in.

Too cool

I just checked the auction... bidding closed... item no longer available. Someone must have twisted his arm to take it off early... maybe gave him a little bonus That looked like a nice horn.

1) Yamaha Band and Orchestra YCR2330II Short Model Bb Cornet (under $800)
2) Kanstul CCC 930 - Bb Cornet (approx $900)
3) Getzen Eterna 800 Series Bb Cornet (approx $999)
4) Besson BE927 Soverein Bb Cornet -Used B Quality - $959
5) Used Besson International Cornet -Closeout - $799

Some of the above are student or intermediate horns, but a good for casual playing on cornet parts or in brass bands. IMO, If it's gonna be a full-time gig .. go for the pro models - Kanstul ZKC-1530, Getzen Eterna 800, etc ....

I've actually got a couple of large bore Getzen Eternas I've been asked to sell for a band here. I'll put them on the Marketplace, but they are both copper bell models which have been silver plated from new. They're about 10 years old and have the original cases. We're looking at around US$600 each plus shipping. Email me for photos - I'll have the pictures ready in a day or so.

That ($600 US for the Eterna) is a great price for a great horn. I paid $560 for mine; it's a '72 model in silver and large bore. A very impressive cornet although I did have to spend another $40 or so for a lot of dent removal, straightening up the 3rd slide, and removing a butcher-repaired marching lyre mount and spot plating the slide.

I'm very pleased with my Connstellation 38A short model. They can be found occasionally on eBay for $500 or less. Big bore, big sound, quality workmanship. lst valve trigger, 3rd valve stop rod. Nickel and brass. Built like a bridge. I believe Nat Adderly played one of these.

Another good horn, although I'm not sure it's properly called "short," is the Conn Victor 80A. You can find these on eBay for $200 to $400. The early ones convert to A. The later ones don't. Also a big bore horn (.584) but they don't play big. Bix played one of these. So did Clyde McCoy, and so does Jim Callum of the NPR Riverwalk show.

Jim,
If I'm not mistaken...Nat played a King Silversonic.

Butch,

Thanks, I didn't know that. Also, I saw an old post from Bill Adam today on the musicmakers.trumpet news group regarding Bix's horn. He says it was a Conn 6A, which looks a lot like the 80A.

Nat Adderly played a Conn Connstellation short cornet for a while, but played a King sterling bell cornet for many years (brother Cannonball played a King alto), so you are both right!

He was playing the King when I saw the quintet live in 1966 in Cleveland. Now talk about a show-that same evening I saw THE Miles Davis Quintet, the original Dave Brubeck Quartet w/ Paul Desmond, the Horace Silver Quintet, the Jimmy Smith Trio, Nina Simone, and Sarah Vaughn! I sat right down front in about the third row- what a night of jazz for a wide-eyed high school kid!
