When looking for vintage cornets, who were the better cornet makers?

I hadn't seen a reply to this and I'm interested in this as well.. so ..bump! I've been watching ebay but I just don't have a clue which cornet (or flugelhorn for that matter) I should be looking for. I don't live anywhere near a place that I could go try one so I'm probably going to just hit or miss on ebay... I'd rather hit! Thanks..
edited to add:
..just realized there was a thread just a few lines away that had some good replys about cornets.. how about flugels?

Thanks OldKid, but who (other than Monette) are at the top of the heap in the vintage cornet and current cornet markets? I think folks may be unwilling to respond thinking that there will be a rush to buy up all the Ebay horns. _________________ Allen - 'Chops-in-Hotlanta'

If you are looking top end, PM Tom about the Wild Thing cornet, whatever you buy ya owe it to yourself to give this one a looksee.. rich sound, and he was playing a really shallow mpc, but the pros always make it sound easy. |

Vintage, Conn is the way to go for starters...80-A Victors are going for a song on ebay, and if you can find either a 28-A or 38-A Connstellation under 600, they are great horns.
The Olds Ambassadors are pretty plentiful, and a lot of people really like these. For a 1st cornet, you can get into one of these for under 100 and make up your own mind. If it isn't for you, don't give up on cornets, just sell it and try something else.
The Yamaha sheppard's crook is supposed to be a good horn, although I've never played one, so I don't know.
Come on gang, jump in, the water's fine...... |

Hey, don't know about the situation in the US...
But here in Europe, all the top brassbands (and there are a lot of these in my country), are playing Besson (Sovereign), A. Courtois, or sometimes Yamaha. The Schilke is regarded as the top Eb-cornet. |

I think that the Boston 3-Star is a top of the line cornet, but there are a whole lot more as far as new ones go. There are some awesome old conn's (1880-1930)that have been restored that probably sound awesome and are beautiful to boot. The most prized would be one of the prototype cornets that Blackburn brought to the Atlanta Trumpet Fest in August. Dont forget that the mouthpiece makes a huge difference in the sound of any horn and is especially true of the true cornet sound. On cornets it seems like the more curves the better it sounds(to me anyway) |
