Pretty fundamental question. Do you use slide cream, valve oil or both on your third valve slide? Thanks

Hetman 4 or 6 works really well on my horns. Ultra Pure slide grease does the trick too.

Hetman 4 or Hetman 6. Works well and easy to apply.

I've tried both Hetman's 4 and Ultrapure slide grease. I prefer Hetman's oil because it doesn't gob up at the end of the slides. Both work great, though.

I use Selmer slide grease and cut it with a little Blue Juice valve oil. Very slick slide operation that way, but it needs to be a slide with a stop, or it will fall off.

Bach Rotor Oil. Works great and lasts. Doesn't require any cutting or mixing.

Is Hetman's 4 the same consistency as rotor oil? I'm asking because I have rotor oil for my "French" Horn.

I use Schilke slide grease and cut it with a drop or two of valve oil.

I used apply slide grease and/or anhydrous lanolin for a long time, then I discovered that "key oil" (for woodwinds) is just slightly thicker than oil, and lasts quite well. I love the consistency without having to do anything. It's as simple as adding a couple of drops - you're good to go!

For the record, I have also recently tried Hetman's "slide oil" and it's been working fairly well... I still like key oil a little better, though. Give it a try.

Schilke slide grease and two drops of Berp BioOil on each leg of the slide. After about one day it works like a valve for months.

Also a Hetman fan here. Depending on the horn I use 4 or 5 weight slide oil. The 4 is thinner for tight slides, and the 5 is a bit heavier for normal slides. No mixing is needed and lasts a long time. If you're a typical trumpet/cornet player you will put a drop of slide oil on your 1/3 slides before each playing session. I was introduced to these wonderful slide oils by Joe Hetman himself, who is a fantastic player too by the way.

Another Hetman fan here as well.
I personally use #4 for my horns.
The oil itself really cleaned out any gunk that was on my slides and I generally felt that grease was too thick.

When I was given a horn just as a back up horn I found out that the man used key oil because it worked well for him. I use a combination of grease and oil. I am a big fan of selmer slide and cork grease, the red stuff. And I use it on all my slides and for my first and third I cut it with oil. More oil on third then first because it needs to be faster and also has a stop rod. With the exception of horns without a ring or saddle on the first slide. Like flugels or older horns. I usally tune with my lips.

Chalk up another vote for Hetman light slide. The stuff is fantastic and doesn't break down like thinned down Schilke slide grease (what I used to use).

Anhydrous lanolin with a bit of Ultra Pure. Lasts until I wash my slides.

Schilke slide grease cut with Al Cass valve oil. Takes a little "working in", but once done is issue free.

FWIW, you can make your own slide grease by mixing anhydrous lanolin and vasoline.

I use Schilke slide grease, but I found that if I didn't cut it with valve oil it lasted a lot longer. After applying I work it in for about 3 minutes and I'm ready to go.

Oil. Why make it difficult to throw the slide?
