Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but it looked right for this.
I got a piece of music for auditions for band next year, and there's a symbol on it I'm not sure about. It looks like a weird infinity symbol with one of the middle 'rungs' missing, and is between a quarter note and a dotted 8th note.
Thanks,
Hunter
P.s. Happy Easter to all

It's called a turn. See Arban.
Here's a Youtube link.

This is from Wikipedia:

"Turn (also known as gruppetto)A short figure consisting of the note above the one indicated, the note itself, the note below the one indicated, and the note itself again. It is marked by a mirrored S-shape lying on its side above the staff."

The staff examples didn't copy over, so go here:

Note that the orientation of the "S" (laying on its left side or right side) determine which way the turn is played.

Let me guess: Wagner? In that case, check the direction of the turn, it may not be the "standard" one. Playing it incorrectly wouldn't score any points in an orchestra audition. Check "Rienzi".

It's just for school band, and I'm pretty sure our band director wouldn't try to make us play a wagner piece for the audition. Actually, if I had brought my Arban book to the beach, I would bet money it's just a simple excercise from that.
