I think this is a good example of how playing the trumpet can be as much a mental state of mind as it is a physical state. I used to give lessons to a high school player who had a poor range. He had trouble with a high "C", and nothing anyone suggested ever seemed to work. One day, out of frusteration, I told him to put down his horn and do 20 push ups, as this would expand and relax his chest (yeah, right!). After doing his pushups, he hit a solid "C" and "D". Doing the pushups had nothing to do with that, thinking that pushups would help did.
