Just curious; What is the history on Satchmo's equiptment? What kind of horns/mouthpieces did he use?

I know at some point he was endorsing Selmer horns. Most, if not all of his horns, were "balanced models."

Pops played on several makes, but as a pro, he is mostly remembered for Selmer trumpets. To paraphrase him, "Selmer trumpets better than all the rest of the trumpets in the whole g*dd*mn world".

I think he may have played a King too, and Lew Davis mouthpieces I think!

In his home in Corona, Queens (which is now a musuem), there is a collection of horns that not only he (Louis) played but horns that companies and fans gave him over the years. Pops seemed to favor the French Selmers ( balanced action models ) but he has some Leblancs (French) in his arsenal also. I'm not too sure what he played on in his early years, but for most of his career he played the French Selmer Balanced Action Model
25A , I believe. Same horn that Harry James played, until he had King start making his horns in the mid fifties because Selmer wouldn't make a " Harry James Model"

A Harry B. Jay "Columbia" cornet during the King Oliver years. This had a removable leadpipe and the gold plated example I saw in a Louis Armstrong house exhibit on tour in Chicago years ago was set up for a trumpet mouthpiece.
Later Buescher and then Conn trumpets. The Conn was a 56B "New Era", I think. The Selmer balanced models that he played from his first trip to Europe onwards was the 20A, not the large bore that Harry played.
Many different mouthpieces through the years. When Jack Teagarden was in the All-stars he carried around equipment to "custom" modify mouthpieces himself!

Louis played a 19A narrow bore mainly.

Here is some evidence:

I don't know about him and a Super Deluxe, but I have an old magazine ad with him playing a Getzen Slide Trumpet. Naturally, I love that ad.

... 'tis true, Getzen-Guy.
(If pictures don't lie ....)

If I ever find it ... (it's "buried" with a bunch of music memorabilia, including Miles', Maynard's, Harry's autographs). I moved twice within the past 5-years. Maybe you can relate to that (?) ....

Brett --

When (if?) I find it, I'll shoot you a photo-scan copy.

This should be it. It's the first reply by Crossbone for my question on the Trombone Forum. http://tromboneforum.org/index.php/topic,27391.0.html[/img]

During the late 1920s, I believe he played a Buescher 10-22R trumpet (a model of the 10-22 with a rotary valve for a key change instead of the main tuning slide insert).

In his early years he did play a Harry B. Jay columbia with trumpet mpc. I have a 1922 model. large bore in excellent condition. Plays very well. Mine has the cornet mpc pipe. like a long shepherd's crook cornet.

Yes, I have a Hary B. Jay also.Very nice. We should note that King Oliver was playing these. I have always guessed that the very first Hot Fives are played with a fairly traditional cornet mouthpiece. Then, around the time of the Hot Sevens a change to the trumpet mouthpiece. This dovetails with Pop's theatre work where he was required to play trumpet. Eventually, a change to the Buescher. However, recording techniques also enter into the discussion.
PS- The only picture I've ever seen of Louis with a slide cornet is a picture of the Creole Jazz Band. Long before Getzen. If someone has a picture of a mature Louis with a slide trumpet , please post.

Here you go. It's from the January 1959 issue of Music Trades.
