Doc said that oil of cloves, alum, and camphor where not good for your lips because they inhibit the vibrating ability of the lip surface.
I'll tell you what I like to use:
A little witch hazel after the gig.
After a real blood bath type gig I use arnica gel.
For dryness or chapped lips I really like DCT by blistex. There's nothing bad in there for your chops and it smells and tastes better than A&D.
Also during the gig I use Mifflin Wintergreen alcohol to keep the "pore oil" off and reduce any minor swelling.
I have tried everything out there for your chops and I mean EVERYTHING! The above mentioned stuff is the best I've found, and believe me, there where times when I beat the livin' crap out of my chops. The arnica gel really helps you bounce right back.
