How many orchestral (legit) players use the traditional shephard's crook cornet when it is specifically called for in a score? I've seen various contradictory answers around the Internet, so now I'm curious. |

I know philip smith uses a cornet, when he plays the post horn solo in Mahler's 3rd.
There it is called for a posthorn though. |

Depends on the repetoire.
I've played in some orchestras that use cornets whenever called for...mainly to get Doubling pay.
I also sub for a prominient orchestra and have played cornet parts on a trumpet. Yet, the same orchestra used both cornets and trumpets on La Mer. |
