Perhaps this is an American thing, since we all seem to want what we don't already have (consumeritis?), but it's really common to hear players who are pretty good talk about wanting to be known for something they don't do as well as what they are known for. Are you this way?

If you could be any type of player you wanted to be, and be REALLY good at it, what would you be? Take the poll!

If I had to choose one, it'd be a jazz soloist. I fell in love with jazz a few years ago, and will still be in love with it many years from now. Nothing would make me happier if I could play jazz like I hear it.

Though I'd rather be able to play all types of music.

I'd like to become a good golfer, because that will mean that I have more time to play with than I do currently.

With work, Brass band, Soul band, teaching kids, the dreaded DIY, gardening, etc... I have only played golf once in the past 2 years. What I really crave is time!

Orchestra all they way. I have NEVER had as much fun on my horn as I have in an orchestra...The music is more powerful and expansive, and its SOOO good. Orchestral playing is demanding, exciting and so rewarding. (I selected principal, but Ive had just as much fun in the section too. I'd rather sit principal, but I have no qualms sitting in a section because its still and orchestra, and it just doesn't get better than that)

That looks a lot like "I am high" at first glance.
I thought you had had some special brownies or something.

Standing where I do, being somewhat accomplished (by no means near the level of some players here) with improvising, using a plunger (for more than just toilets), doing the big band thing, and playing with a rock group, I have a dream that one day I could stand up on stage with an orchestra behind me and do a concert of "legit" standards such as Carnival de Venice and the Herman Concerto, either that or play principal trumpet on any Mahler symphony. I dream of this because this is what I am least likely to do.

Yes, I realized that and changed it.

I chose "other."

My preference, if I were good enough to be thinking about making a serious living at the trumpet, would be as a studio/session player.

I would like to play on soundtracks, recording sessions, CDs, etc...also live performance gigs that backed major artists, or as a brass sideman to a major artist's band...but I would like to be able to be selective...I might not be interested in playing behind just anyone...

I chose other as well, Id really like to start a small jazz quartet or quintet eventually. ranging everywhere from miles style to funk/rock. My hero is Mark Pender, if I could have a band like his Id be in heaven.

I picked other also, as I would like to have a job where I could be home every night so I could take part in some of the performance groups already in my area. There is a new orchestra that just started up and actually PAYS the musicians for both rehersals and performances, so most of the really talented players jumped ship from the community band. One of my friends said at the last pops rehersal there were only 4 trumpets. I would love to be able to commit to something like that. Another friend of mine knew I have started playing again, and invited me to sit in with the 'moldy oldies' garage band he plays in, just a bunch of folks who get together at his place on the river and annoy the neighbors. They have 3 saxes, a t-bone player, and never less than 3 guitars, multiple basses, multiple keyboards, and they do stuff from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Beer is drunk, lies are told, and everyone has a blast.

I don't have aspirations of fame and fortune, but would like to be able to do something other than sit in a motel room and practice scales for a change.

I checked off other. You show "Orchestra Principal" but not orchestra section
player. I'd love to land a gig in a terrific section, I wouldn't care if it was
2nd, 3rd, or even 4th utility. I already sit Principal in two groups and
thoroughly enjoy it (Yes! I'm a control freak. That entire corner belongs
to me, not just the trumpets!!) but both are regional orchestras. Pretty good
in their own rights but not "major league". Ahhhh...someday............

I clicked other. My heart is in teaching. I want to play so I can teach, so I figure I want to play as much as I can as well as possible to help me teach other people.

Peace,
Kevin

I clicked jazz soloist, but it would be great to play on soundtracks. Imagine having Uan Rasey's career (not to mention talent!).
