At the risk of starting a heated debate, I think they're OK as long as you respect their limits as light-duty tools, something to reach for before you take it to the shop.
This one is $10, $11 in fun colors. (yes, the pictures are wrong)

I paid a similar price for a similar one, and it's gotten several stuck mouthpieces out. A couple needed some taps from a rawhide mallet, but mostly the mouthpieces came loose with very little force on the thumb screws. The business end(s) are aluminum, so there's very little risk of damaging your instrument. The receiver-end jaws are a little large for cornets, but that's easily fixed with a file--on the jaws, not the cornet! Obviously from the review pictures, it's possible to overstress these pullers but I'd guess they were tightening them with pliers.
Maybe I got lucky? What do the rest of you think?

Fair question! Maybe I've read too many instrument repair horror stories, but it seems like there's a lot of hate for cheap tools & "dad" fixes. Which I get, but these are soooo much better than a pair of pliers and not much more expensive. Just don't use the pliers on the puller instead....

Before putting any tool onto your horn, try physics first. Put the mp in ice water to see if it'll cool down enough (i.e., shrink a tiny bit) so you can pull it out. If that doesn't work, try applying hot water to the mp receiver to expand the metal a tiny bit, while keeping the mp in ice water. Too extreme temps might loosen it enough to remove it, and this can be done without affecting the finish of the horn or the mp.
