Armstrong and Gillespie were also both educators, so was Anderson.

You have a chart of "jazz styles" because you must place them in context of "before" and "after" particular schools of playing and figure out how later players incorporate them in their playing.

So if their playing is not your personal taste, I would suggest downloading their trumpet methods (Gillespie, Anderson, Miles) and try to place those in a modern context. Miles' method is mostly spread by word of mouth or online masterclasses.


The most difficult thing in Jazz trumpet is to master the different arriculations and effects. You should practice those very carefully, because their foundation is highly advanced (21st century) classical music and so takes patience and time.

Of course it's not compulsory to practice those techniques, but try to listen to current classical players like Clement Saunier and Hakan Hardenberger etc. and figure out where those techniques are from.
