If I end my practice day with the Six Notes, do I need to warm down before ending for the day?
If so, how? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I studied with a Caruso teacher and with Carmine as well. The 6 notes were always the first thing they had me do. |

I end my morning practice with the 6 notes and it seems to set me up well for my afternoon session, which is more about playing tunes.

Carmine said you should never do his calisthenics on tired chops, so I'm not sure doing them at the end of the day is advisable unless you are still relatively fresh. Having said that, if you are doing them (on chops that aren't fatigued) at the end of your playing day, I don't think it is necessary to warm down further. If I do the other things that are eventually added to the Caruso routine in the more advanced stages (scales, Clarkes, pedals, etc) those exercises serve as a sort of warm down. In general though, I don't think he ever told me to warm down. However, he did tell me to always finish up on my main horn, especially if I had done a lot of playing on flugel, cornet, piccolo, or muted. That reorients you and sets you up and orients you so the next morning goes more smoothly. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician
