Your body and mind should be (correctly) ready to play what you are about to play.
I don't disagree that excessive or counter-production tension should be avoided, but trumpet playing is a physical activity and some amount of physical and mental preparedness (positioning, alignment, tension, etc.) is required. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

It is not just about air flow. We must apply air pressure to the resistance of the tone in the instrument. Resistance to flow inside the body is a detriment to efficiency for sure. I take that is what you are discouraging.
But no, the air flow, through the complete system is never "free", that is, without resistance. |
