I was watching the old people channel the other day aka AMC (hehe) anyways then this movie came on. I don't remember the name of it. it was something about 5 pennies and this guy that plays cornet and they louis armstrong gives him a lesson on improv. the guy gets real good and then he has to quit and he makes a come back.

Anyways louis armstrong pops up on the movie allot.

Anyone know the name of the movie. And was that a real life story?

I believe it was "Red Nichols and the Five Pennies" or five little pennies. And yes he certainly was real. That is a good movie.

Not sure I'm 100% correct but I should be pretty close.

Later,
Phil

I think Phil is exactly right. The Red Nichols recordings were very popular in their day and are often overlooked when people talk about interesting examples of pre-Swing Era jazz.

Clarkston, Michigan, huh? Isn't that the hometown of the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the man who is going to put the collar on Jason Williams and send Duke home to get ready for the NBA draft?!?

Go Hoosiers!!!

The song "man with a horn" played by Harry James is greeeeaaaaaaaaaat. Such a sweet sound. Harry James is definitely one of the great players in the last century. I love his sound!

Yep,to add to the other info-all the Danny Kay solos were played by Red Nichols-he certainly was no slouch and for a number of years he was the main man in NYC, shows and bookings.

Little know fact about the five pennies, they were the first group to record a timpani in a jazz setting. I heard it on NPR the other night, sounded pretty cool.

Hi Bill,

You are exactly right, Clarkston is where the Fife kid is from. He's the youngest of 3 and they were all good basketball players as was their dad

I'm a Spartan myself and my dad was a Boilermaker.

Regards,
Phil

Anyways there was part in the movie where he was in a taxi with a lady and I think he was drunk ans he tells her that he was playing carnival of venice for his church by the age of 6?? do you believe that??

Was he like a monster of a player or something?
