Hi
I've been auditioning different Bb's for a while now and have just last night settled, somewhat to my surprise, on a Conn V1 (1BR 46 in silver). After trying many lovely horns, others that nearly made it were a Kanstul copper belled 1500 series, and a Xeno 8345G.
all the best

ARB
Piccolo trumpets tend to be used for playing baroque music primarily, although many modern composers have started writing music specifically for this wonderful instrument.
I haven’t seen piccolos used much in jazz, but at the ITG Conference this year Rex Richardson did pick one up for the final number in the jam session, on the last night. So, it can be done – he was fantastic on it!!
When arranging jazz for brass ensembles, many arrangers use the piccolo trumpet to emulate the clarinet – listen to almost any of the Canadian Brass jazz arrangements and you will hear this in action.
I have just posted a new thread in the Jazz section of this forum to see if anyone else has any experience of jazz piccolo, let’s see what people come up with.
With all this talk of Eclipse trumpets, I really should try one out. Maybe it will take the place of the Blackburn piccolo as my next instrument? |

First I would add an Eclipse out of pure curiosity. Out of horns I've played the next horn would definatily be a Monette 2000LTJ. Since it's so hard to narrow it down to one horn I'll try one of each Key/type. Next a Short Model WT Cornet, and a Stomvi Elite Eb/D _________________ Andrew Fowler

Well, I've got a Lawler Flugel on the way, but after that I'll be looking for a C. Perhaps a Kanstul or Conn V-1, or maybe I'll hold out for the new Yamaha-Malone that are rumored to be "in the works." Anyone here tried the Conn V-1 C's? |

Bert Truax has a V1-C, but they're still working on it. I don't think this is a fair comparison since Bert is trying to get to match the response of his tweaked Bach tuning-bell C. Bert didn't know what Fred Powell was going to do, but I suspect it will involve tweaking the gap and leadpipe. I didn't play it, but Bert said he likes it a lot and thinks it has high potential. I think he's comparing it to a very special Bach.
He loves his V1B#34 and his V1 flugel.

Only in German is there a single word for "master brass instrument maker"! My all-time favorite German word is the one for "cassette tape plastic wrapper". It's about a hundred letters long.
Oh, and my next horn will be either a new Bach C 229 with the H leadpipe or an older Selmer picc. |

Go to the Straub site listed above and check out the guy's reflection in the bell!
It looks like he's wearing an ankle length flower print dress or perhaps a dressing gown. Maybe he's in his pajamas...wunderbar!!!
Is he in his bedroom doing this with a small 35mm camera? |

No, that's what he really weares. I know him personally and he's not the most fashionable guy in town.
But he's very nice and he knows extremely much about building trumpets. _________________ http://www.brassimport.com

Well, I just played a Scherzer piccolo a few days ago and decided after about 5 notes that I will be obtaining one of those next. Man, what a horn. I would love a Blackburn, but the Scherzer is a few $$$ less (vs. a used Blackburn) and rotary valves are so nice! |

I've never played the Scherzer picc but I got to play their rotary valve Eb and yes its a fine horn. Ellen Bayne from the Brass Band Journal basically played itself. I may have to try their picc before I buy another.
Wonder if I could get a deal for the picc AND the Eb ..... oh well, its fun to dream

If it's not a horn I build, then I think I'd like to buy either an old Benge MLP (3X+) or the modern Chicago MLP. Tried the Chicago at the ITG Conference this year and was really impressed.

The more posts I read the more confused I get. I would definately like to try the WT short cornet and a Blackburn picc.
After that in no particular order;
Eclipse
Scherzer rotary picc
Lawler
straub (looks interesting)
This wishing is fun!!

I'm saving up for a gold plated Monette Raja horn complete with rubbies and diamonds. So far I've got enough saved to buy one of the bottom valve caps.
