Hi,

Has anyone bought one of those overhauled horns from Alaska Brass (user name "musicianscorner") on EBay? Just curious about how they play and if anyone could offer any feedback on them. They "look" pretty good. Here's one on auction now:

While I don't know about playability, I do know from following this outfit's listings 1) they know quality instruments and 2) they do a great job showing what they have.
Their refinishing and replating looks to be great, and if the restoration for playing is as good as their visual restoration, I think they justify their price above the other listings for a compatible product.

The horns look great but the price may be a bit high. That all I know about that.

The price is pretty steep on these horns.

I have only had one friend who actually ordered one from them, and he was not satisfied with it because the Ambassador he received was badly pitted in some obvious places, though it played all right and had a good plating job. He eventually returned it, I believe. It was just a rough horn underneath all the fancy plating and engraving. If it had been in better shape, he probably would have kept it. Several of my friends had Ambassadors at the time (I still have the same one I had then) and all of ours were in better condition than the one he had received.

The only input I can add is the company he uses for his refurb work, Borodi Music, is great!

After seeing how great the horns looked that Alaska Brass had for auction I sent an Olds Recording I won on eBay to them. They did a great job! I was concerned that they might wear down some of the bell engraving by buffing too much, but it came back sharp and clean.

It almost looks like Malcolm is selling off his stock?! Their eBay name changed a while back and he has fixed price deals on eBay right now.

He does have great feedback, and they are (mostly) Olds classic horns!
