The first concert of the 2009 - 2010 season will feature a virtuoso version of the William Tell Overture (featured in the hit movie Brassed Off), a new setting of Eric Whitacre’s classic choral work Sleep, Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral, masterworks by Philip Sparke, as well as Somewhere and Penny Lane by the Beatles. The group will feature Tuba soloist James Manganaro performing Capriccio by Rodney Newton.
About the Soloist
James Manganaro began his musical studies at the age of 11, with the trumpet. He quickly decided that he wanted to play something more unusual and was drawn towards the Tuba, which he began to play at the age of 13. James has attended several international music festivals and workshops including a summer at the Aspen Music Festival in 2001. He is a graduate of San Francisco State University where he studied with Zachariah Spellman of the San Francisco Opera. In 2004 he received his Post Graduate Diploma in music performance from the Royal Northern College of Music under the direction of both Roger Bobo and James Gourlay. He has continued to perform with British style Brass Bands, first as a member of the Chicago Brass Band and currently with the Silicon Valley Brass Band.
